Orland Park agrees to join 'Restore the Canopy' sapling giveaway; trustees warn of care needs

The Village of Orland Park Board voted to participate in the Conservation & Sustainability advisory board’s recommendation to join the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's ‘‘Restore the Canopy, plant a tree’’ program. The program will provide small oak saplings free to residents on a first-come, first-served basis.
Jim, representing the advisory board, told trustees the committee pursued the donation and several members have volunteered to hand out saplings. "They are formally recommending that we pursue this no-cost program," he said. Trustee Justine Lawrence described the saplings as small oak varieties — white oak, red oak, swamp white oak and bur oak — and cautioned residents they will require attentive care in their early years. "They will need a lot of care for this first couple years," Trustee Lawrence said, urging residents to consider placement and watering needs.
Trustees noted organizers do not yet have a final count but estimated the village may receive roughly 50–200 trees; distribution timing will be announced once confirmed. The board approved participation by unanimous voice/roll-call vote.
The program is intended to celebrate Arbor Day, promote canopy restoration and involve volunteer members of the advisory board in distribution. The board asked staff to coordinate logistics and publicize the distribution date when available.
