The board read a resolution recounting Colonel Norman’s military service, including enlistment during World War II and leadership through the Korean and Vietnam wars; his son accepted the recognition on the family’s behalf. “We hereby recognize and honor Colonel William C. Clint Norman for his extraordinary life of service,” a supervisor read from the resolution.
The board also proclaimed March 24 as Peace Corps Volunteers Day to mark the federal agency’s 65th anniversary and praised the contributions of returned volunteers. Patrick Carter of the Northern California Peace Corps Association accepted that proclamation and urged residents to engage with volunteers and their stories.
In another item, the board proclaimed March Disabilities Awareness Month and invited representatives from Gateway Center and the San Andreas Regional Center to the dais. Mike Gonzalez, executive director of Gateway Center of Monterey County, described the organization’s residential and day-program services and thanked supervisors for local support. Whitney Clark, a long-term Gateway participant, told the board how the organization has helped her engage in volunteering and community activities.
Finally, the board presented a proclamation recognizing the American Red Cross and local volunteers for disaster response and prevention activities, including smoke alarm installation and family assistance after house fires. A Red Cross representative highlighted the organization’s reliance on volunteers and urged community involvement.
These ceremonial items were presented early in the agenda and were adopted by unanimous voice vote. The board took no formal policy action tied to the proclamations; they serve as civic recognition of the groups and individuals honored and signal the county’s support for veterans’ recognition, volunteer service and disability inclusion.
