The Belvidere City Council Committee of the Whole on Nov. 10 recognized local police officers with awards from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.
Ari Briskman, vice president of AIM, told the council the group has a 30-year history of honoring enforcement efforts and said DUI enforcement is "thankless but very necessary" work that helps keep communities safe. Briskman spoke as deputy chief Byrd and other police leaders joined the council to present the honors.
Deputy Chief Byrd announced that Officer Tony Jones and Officer Joe Danilak received AIM awards; Officer Matthew Korn was also named but was not present. Mayor and council members thanked the officers for their enforcement work and for protecting road users. The mayor recalled a prior presentation that underscored the human cost of impaired driving, noting it included a photograph of a 12-year-old boy that brought the issue home for the council.
City leaders said the recognition is part of an ongoing effort to encourage officer-led traffic-safety enforcement, which they described as particularly important at a time when law enforcement recruitment and retention are challenging.
The presentation required no council action; it was an official recognition during the committee meeting.
