Council member Glass introduces hiring-review bill for applicants with recent DHS experience

Councilmember Evan Glass introduced the Continued Excellence in Public Service Act during the April 28 session. The proposed ordinance would require additional background review for any applicant to the Montgomery County Police Department who worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on or after Jan. 21, 2025.
"This legislation adds one extra step to ensure that anyone who participated in this federal administration's brutal treatment of immigrants is not tasked with keeping our community safe," Glass said. He also thanked Chief Yamada and staff for working with his office on the bill. A public hearing on the proposal is tentatively scheduled for June 9, 2026.
No vote was taken on the introduction; council staff said the bill will follow the normal public‑hearing schedule.
