Oglesby council tables vactor truck purchase pending cost, storage and staffing analysis

Commissioner McDermott (speaker S3) introduced the item, saying multiple departments could use the truck but that the city would need a Class A operator, operator training, and a storage building. Members questioned whether the purchase had been appropriated in the current fiscal year and whether leasing might be more practical than a lump-sum purchase.
Council discussion stressed the need for a five-year usage and maintenance analysis to compare ongoing contract service costs with the capital and operating costs of owning a vactor truck. One member said, “It’s gonna cost a little more,” while another cautioned that adding a new vehicle would also bring building and staffing obligations that must be fully accounted for.
After a brief exchange about past local experience with an older vactor unit and the city’s typical annual payments for outsourced services, a motion to table the purchase and return with solid numbers and a facility plan passed by roll call. The council asked staff to provide projections for purchase versus leasing, detailed annual maintenance and operator-cost estimates, and potential locations or costs to build or retrofit a garage to house the truck.
No purchase contract was authorized. The item will return to a future agenda after staff reports the requested financial and facility analyses.
