Property committee delays change to tax-deed sale language

Treasurer Jody Myers brought forward a proposal at the Jan. 4 Marquette County Property Committee meeting to change the county's tax-deed auction language so that purchasers would be responsible for property taxes at the time of purchase going forward. The change was intended to align purchaser liability with current practice, and committee members discussed proration and how sheriff's-sale language reads in comparison.
Bart O’Brien moved, with Mike Raddatz seconding, to adopt the revised wording. After discussion the motion was withdrawn by both O’Brien and Raddatz and the committee reached consensus that the wording for tax-deed properties should match the language used for sheriff's-sale properties. Committee members directed that the item be returned to the February agenda so sheriff's-sale language can be clarified and final wording approved.
Myers also said she had considered increasing the price of the county's tax-data list but that new information she received would prevent that price increase; that matter will also be revisited in February. No formal vote was taken on either substantive change at the Jan. 4 meeting.
