Des Moines County Board adopts $41.65 million FY2026–27 budget

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors adopted the FY2026–2027 county budget on April 21, approving a total budget of $41,651,191 and related appropriations for fiscal year 2027.
Budget Director Cheryl McVey presented the proposed budget during a public hearing, and Vice Chair Tom Broeker also spoke in support of adopting the plan. Jim Cary moved to open and close the hearing after no public comments were received; Cary then moved to adopt the budget and Broeker seconded. The board approved Resolution #2026-026 adopting the budget and directed County Auditor Sara Doty to file the budget and establish accounting records per the attached schedules.
The adopted appropriations, set out in Resolution #2026-027 and Schedule A, allocate major amounts to Secondary Roads ($9,077,993), the Sheriff’s Office ($3,859,650), and Non-Departmental expenses ($8,750,382). The resolution notes statutory controls on expenditures and directs the auditor to establish separate accounts to track appropriations and report monthly. The schedule lists total appropriations at $41,651,191 and a reported total county appropriations of $38,095,068 after specified adjustments.
The board also approved Resolution #2026-028 setting a public hearing for FY26 budget amendments on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Room at the Des Moines County Courthouse and directed the Budget Director to publish the required notice and summary.
The board’s votes on the budget motions were recorded as motions by Member Jim Cary and seconded by Vice Chair Tom Broeker; minutes indicate motions passed unanimously. The board adjourned the regular meeting at 9:59 a.m. and later convened a work session to open RFPs for county property sales.
