Huron Valley educators recommend new middle‑school 'WIN' structure with dedicated X Block for interventions

Huron Valley Schools staff presented the WIN task‑force's recommended middle‑school schedule designed to provide both targeted interventions and enrichment without removing students from core instruction. The committee — which included teachers, principals from both middle schools and parent representatives — tested multiple models and recommended a version staff referred to in their materials as "model B," refined through teacher feedback.

Connie, a teaching‑and‑learning leader on the task force, summarized the guiding beliefs the committee prioritized: that WIN should provide meaningful support to help students succeed in their classes, that WIN should be used for targeted/tiered academic intervention for students with significant learning gaps, that WIN should support students' social‑emotional needs, and that the structure should remain flexible so teams can adjust by student needs. Under the recommended schedule, Monday and Wednesday would run first through sixth hour with seminar at the end of the day so students see all classroom teachers before seminar. The task force proposed a new block called "X Block" (flexible placement in the day) to pilot evidence‑based tier 2 and tier 3 interventions, gifted programming and intentional independent reading time. The group also recommended no Friday seminar in exchange for recapturing instructional minutes in core classes.

Board members asked questions about pilot timing, staffing needs, small‑group sizes and implementation timelines; presenters said the first year would be a gradual rollout focused on piloting interventions and building teacher collaboration time, with broader changes considered for year two depending on data collected.
