La Grange board says IDOT will review Plainfield Road closure to reduce cut-through traffic during 47th Street work

President Kugler told the Village of La Grange Board of Trustees that village staff met with Illinois Department of Transportation and Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways engineers to press for steps to reduce cut-through traffic caused by the 47th Street and East Avenue construction. He said the agencies agreed to review a proposed closure at Plainfield Road for northbound East Avenue traffic and to coordinate with mapping platforms so routing reflects the construction.

"IDOT engineers have committed to reviewing the proposed closure and will be letting us know the results of their assessment shortly," President Kugler said. He added that county and state partners also agreed to reach out to mapping programs such as Google Maps and Waze to ensure construction is properly reflected and drivers are not being routed through neighborhood streets.

Trustee Augustine, who described driving the neighborhoods with residents, said targeted enforcement and clearer directional signage at the 47th/Plainfield/La Grange Road area have helped but urged continued pressure on state and county partners and consideration of local, temporary measures to slow traffic. "There's a real inadequacy at that intersection," Augustine said, arguing that larger signs and other localized steps could reduce detours through small residential streets.

The board did not take a formal vote on the intersection measures at the meeting. President Kugler said the village will continue to work with IDOT and Cook County and update residents when the agencies complete their assessment.
