Congressman LaHood's office presents bicentennial proclamation to Washington

"I congratulate the city of Washington on its bicentennial and commend its citizens for carrying forward a legacy of perseverance, service, and pride," Coyle said as she presented the text that was submitted to the House of Representatives on Aug. 26, 2025. The proclamation recounted Washington’s founding, ties to Abraham Lincoln, and trials including the 2013 EF4 tornado, which the proclamation said destroyed more than 1,000 structures and killed three residents.
Mayor presented the proclamation to bicentennial co-chairs Larry Sloniger and Jewel Ward and recognized Kim Brownfield as events chair. In public comment, a bicentennial committee member thanked volunteers and partners and highlighted a five-year effort that included a drone show and coordination with the chamber of commerce and the park district.
The council did not take formal action on the proclamation; the reading served as ceremonial recognition and public acknowledgement of the commission’s work. The committee’s public remarks included a list of volunteers and fundraising committee members credited with producing events throughout the bicentennial year.
