Topsail High band invited to perform in 2028 London parade; district weighs cost and logistics

Dr. Taylor introduced Topsail High School’s band director, who told the board the band has been officially nominated to perform in a London parade on Jan. 1, 2028, and described logistics, estimated costs and early interest.

Mr. Wincek explained the nomination process is selective and that about 12 bands are nominated for a given year with roughly eight expected to accept. He described the trip package—eight days including flights, hotel (likely a Hilton), daily breakfast and dinner, instrument shipping service, local transport, and an Oyster travel card for students in London—and noted the parade draws large crowds and global broadcast viewers.

The director reported 111 students and 92 parents signed an initial interest survey (he estimated parent numbers might realistically be closer to 50) and an early per-student cost estimate of about $4,200 for students only. He said that with parents included in a full group the total could approach $850,000. He asked the board to provide a decision to the parade committee by the end of the month so organizers can hold or release spots.

Board members praised the opportunity and asked about timelines, security checks and fundraising; the director said the district would follow board policy, complete Homeland Security checks and work with boosters, sponsors and fundraising campaigns to lower costs so the trip would not exclude students for financial reasons.

Next steps: staff will continue policy and security clearances under Policy 33-20, work with boosters on fundraising, and return with a recommended timeline and payment-plan structure if the board elects to proceed.
