Councilors favor a Route 59 corridor planning push over an immediate Cantera refresh

Community and Economic Development Director Amy Emery asked the committee for guidance on whether to proceed with the adopted Cantera planning work or to swap the Cantera item for one of four alternatives: planning for opportunity sites, a Route 59 corridor plan, accessory dwelling unit regulations, or a sign-code rewrite.
Emery outlined local changes since earlier planning, noting openings of new restaurants, a cinema tenant, a major Northwestern Medicine Center expansion and relocation of the OSI Group headquarters as evidence the market has shifted. She said staff wants council direction before preparing an RFP and associated budget materials for consulting services.
Several aldermen said they preferred shifting focus to a Route 59 corridor study, citing TIF 4, the city's ownership of key parcels near Butterfield Road and the potential to coordinate with ongoing traffic and space studies. Alderman Crockenberg and Alderman Weidner specifically named the Route 59 corridor as a priority; Mayor Johnson and others agreed that Cantera can be observed while staff pursues corridor work.
Emery said no motion was needed that night; staff will update the citywide work plan and present budget/resource recommendations at the Nov. 24 committee meeting.
