Committee recommends $149,500 contract to replace riser pipe at Country Ridge water tower

Utility Management Superintendent Zach Jardine told the committee that the 500,000-gallon Country Ridge west tank (constructed in 1979) has two significant leaks in the 10-inch riser (column) pipe and that staff had temporarily patched them. Jardine recommended replacing the entire column pipe — roughly a 100-foot assembly — and presented a proposal from Maguire Iron, the city's existing maintenance provider.
Jardine said the scope could include replacing the existing 90-degree fitting if needed and installing a new 10-inch control valve. He told the committee the work was necessary to "ensure the long term integrity and reliability of the water tower and maintain safe and dependable water service to the residents and businesses." The city had not budgeted specifically for the replacement that year but staff said funds exist in the budget to cover the $149,500 contract.
Alderman Weidner asked whether Maguire Iron has performed satisfactorily for the city; Jardine confirmed an existing service/maintenance relationship and said the firm had been responsive. Alderman Weidner moved to recommend city council approve the Maguire Iron contract for $149,500; the committee seconded the motion and approved it on a voice vote.
Staff said the tower would be temporarily taken out of service during the replacement but that the recently placed new tower would keep the system balanced so residents should not experience significant service disruptions during the work.
