Committee representatives explained that the oval design reduces the memorial footprint and moves it farther from an existing path; one revised layout measures roughly 30 feet by 50 feet and was moved to sit approximately 10½ feet away from the path to reduce impacts to the Brooks/Brooke wetland area. The committee said they have raised or have commitments totaling about $199,688 so far and that the estimated shovel‑ready threshold is roughly $300,000.
Trustees and public commenters raised questions about how many trees would need to be removed and about long‑term maintenance and security. The mayor/chair confirmed that the village would own and manage the site if the project proceeds on village property; police cameras that cover parts of the park will help with security coverage, staff said.
Trustee Mason, who spoke in favor of the project, emphasized the committee’s fundraising efforts and veteran involvement: "The people in town wanna support this," Mason said, noting recent fundraising events that generated community donations. Several trustees urged the committee to provide a clear accounting of donated funds and outstanding pledges before construction begins. The board scheduled the final vote on the design at the regular meeting and then approved the oval design during that session.
Next steps: the veterans committee and village staff will provide a list of donors/pledges and an up‑to‑date balance sheet; staff will coordinate site work, tree mitigation and a landscaping plan to replace any removed plantings.
