Council approves $32,497 purchase of Can-Am utility vehicle for Marion Police Department

The Marion City Council approved a purchase for the police department of a Can-Am side-by-side utility vehicle at a cost of $29,997, with an additional $2,500 budgeted to have Fleet Fab install lights and sirens.
Commissioner Bark moved the purchase, citing a recommendation from “Chief Fits and myself.” Chief Fits told the council the vehicle would be a tool for emergency responses, post-disaster access, parades and events and that similar vehicles had been used during recent storms. Staff told the council the unit was the lowest-priced option from Oasis Power Sports after receiving multiple bids and that the purchase fits within the police vehicle spending line (the city was reported to be about $65,000 under the vehicle budget at the time).
Council members asked about licensing and whether the vehicle would be trailered or driven on streets; staff said it would be equipped with required lights and mirrors and could be legally driven on streets when properly outfitted.
The motion was seconded and approved by roll call with all members voting in the affirmative.
