Council hears staff reports on public safety, infrastructure projects and community events

City staff provided routine updates on public safety, infrastructure and upcoming events during the Stewartville City Council meeting.
Fire Chief Brandon reported the department responded to 75 calls for service during the covered period and noted the retirement of long-time firefighter Greg House after 47 years. Brandon said the retirement leaves the department short-staffed and that a hiring process is expected in the spring; the department is also evaluating a records-management system. "With Greg's departure...we're looking at a hiring process this spring," he said.
City engineer Jenna reported receiving notes from the Minnesota Department of Transportation about the signal system and said the city must secure funding before setting a bid letting date. She also said the second-avenue extension vetting results will come to the council at the next meeting and that staff needs to discuss 15th Street specifications with High Forest Township.
Administrator Bill summarized potential construction projects and early planning, and said the city will hold a late-winter or early-spring workshop to present cost summaries and discuss assessments. He also relayed citizen interest in doing an enhanced celebration for the nation's 200th anniversary and suggested working with the chamber of commerce on banners and coordinated events.
Other brief items included parks improvements planned at Lake Lawrence and Rolling Ridge and a reminder of upcoming community events such as a blood drive and WinterFest sponsorships. No formal decisions were taken on staffing or capital projects at this meeting; staff will return with more detailed proposals at later meetings.
