Belvidere council adopts ordinance vacating unused alley between 6th and 7th Streets

The Belvidere City Council on Oct. 20 adopted Ordinance 742h, vacating an alley lying south of 6th Street and north of 7th Street east of Union Avenue.
At second reading, Mayor (speaker 1) told the council the alley "serves no use to the city" and that the property will be divided between the homeowners on each side, avoiding continued city maintenance of unused alley space. Alderman Hoynes moved the ordinance and Alderman Albertini seconded; the roll-call vote was 8–0 in favor.
The mayor said the council had previously examined whether anyone had access rights to the alley and determined that no properties depended on the alley for access. With the ordinance adopted, the property ownership will be adjusted to adjacent property owners and the city will no longer be responsible for maintaining the alley.
The ordinance had been advertised in the Belvidere Republican and a public hearing was opened and closed during the meeting with no members of the public speaking.
The measure takes effect per municipal procedures and will be recorded following filing with the appropriate city offices.
