District staff presented an updated inclement-weather policy to the Schuyler Community Schools Board of Education and described how the draft would formalize practices the district said it already follows.
The staff member presenting said principals are expected to be on site to check buildings during severe-weather events and that custodians and maintenance would handle snow removal and salting. The presenter said the district will aim to make cancellation decisions early and “try to make the call by 10:00 the night before so families have plenty of time to make arrangements.” The presenter added that the district will strive not to hold school when wind chill is 30°F or below.
Board members questioned whether the written policy changes existing practice. A board member asked whether office staff had historically been required to report on snow days; the presenter replied it depends on operational need and that the draft policy is intended to document the current “skeleton” of procedures rather than impose new blanket requirements.
Several board members suggested staff outreach before approving the policy. One board member asked whether it would be appropriate to table approval for a month to allow office staff and principals to raise concerns; the presenter agreed that tabling to gather feedback would be appropriate. The meeting did not include a final vote on the inclement-weather policy.
Next steps recorded in the meeting included additional staff consultation at the building level and returning the item to the board after roughly one month with any adjustments based on employee feedback.
