SPPS director announces resignation; board adopts public process to fill vacancy

Board director Jim Vu announced at the Jan. 6 meeting that he will resign from the Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education effective Feb. 17, 2026.
"Please accept this letter... notice of resignation from my roles as school board director for Saint Paul Public Schools effective as of 02/17/2026," Vu read into the record. He said he will continue to serve on scheduled meetings through that date and will complete work on an ongoing Hmong project before his departure.
In response, the board discussed and approved a resolution setting a public process to fill the vacancy. Under the approved resolution the board chair will issue an open call for applicants; the executive committee will vet submissions and bring two to four finalists to a public board meeting for interviews and a deliberative vote. The resolution directs district staff to publicize the vacancy and to conduct appropriate background checks on applicants.
Board members debated whether finalist interviews should be public or held in smaller groups; the board amended the draft to require public interviews before the full board and approved the amended resolution. General Counsel provided statutory guidance on eligibility and the 30‑day petition period that follows an appointment under Minnesota law.
The board instructed staff to draft application materials that include statutory eligibility requirements and to aim for an expedited timeline to complete the appointment in March, if public notice and applicant response permit.
