Supervisors approve bridge naming, adopt Isaiah 117 MOU, back VMI bills opposition and sign multiple MOUs and appointments

The board unanimously approved a resolution to name the bridge on Cane Street the Fort Quillum Memorial Bridge and directed staff to forward the naming to the Virginia Department of Transportation, noting Gate City had already passed a similar resolution.
Board members adopted a resolution supporting Isaiah 117 and separately approved an MOU in which the county agreed to serve as fiscal agent for that program. Both measures passed by voice vote.
Supervisor Addington read a resolution opposing a proposed mid‑decade change to Virginia’s congressional redistricting process that would give the General Assembly authority to redraw congressional maps; the board voted to transmit the resolution to Richmond and other officials. The board also adopted two resolutions opposing bills in the General Assembly that would affect governance at the Virginia Military Institute.
On administrative items, staff summarized the outcome of an RFP for an architecture and engineering firm on retainer and the board authorized the county administrator to enter a task order agreement with the selected firm for up to five years. The board accepted a $10,000 state equipment reimbursement grant for the sheriff's office and approved multiple routine board and authority appointments (Housing Authority, Public Service Authority, tourism committee and others).
The board authorized a memorandum of understanding with Goodwill Industries to allow donation collections and textile bins at convenience centers, and it authorized the county administrator to sign the MOU.
The board also approved modest sponsorships and contingency disbursements: $1,000 to the High Knob Music Festival and $4,000 to support the county’s VA250 celebration plans.
Most actions passed by voice vote; the record shows motions were made, seconded and carried with supervisors saying "Aye."
