Resort Med Spa owners say Auburn clinic was founded to serve people with darker skin tones

Zufi Shabir and Fatima Salad, co-owners of Resort Med Spa, told hosts of the City of Auburn podcast that they opened the East Main Street clinic after struggling to find providers experienced in treating melanated skin. "Let's create a space where they can come and they can, you know, learn something and teach us in the process," one owner said, describing the business as a "judgment-free zone."
The owners said Resort Med Spa has been open nearly a year, with an anniversary planned in April, and uses a 3D skin analysis that scans multiple layers to assess hydration, UV damage and underlying inflammation. "It uses different type of lights to look at different layers of your skin... it's looking at hydration with a hydrometer, it's looking at UV damage, inflammation underneath the skin," one owner explained on the podcast, describing how objective data shapes a personalized treatment plan.
They emphasized a staged, consultative approach to corrective treatments. Before performing procedures such as microneedling or chemical peels, staff review risk factors with clients and place them on a pre‑treatment regimen to reduce the chance of adverse pigment responses. "We're not gonna just — you walked in and you're asking for a microneedling. That's not gonna happen," an owner said, stressing pre-treatment, treatment and post-care as essential steps.
The owners also described choices in equipment meant to reduce safety risks for darker skin tones. For laser hair removal, they said the technology targets melanin and must be optimized for different skin types to lower the chance of burns or other complications. They said that consideration guided their equipment selection and training.
Resort Med Spa operates at 1202 East Main Street in Auburn and maintains Instagram, TikTok and Facebook profiles under the Resort Med Spa name. The co-owners told the podcast that community response — from neighbors to city officials — has been welcoming and supportive, and that social media management and outreach has been one of the larger time demands since opening.
