Cannon Falls board approves finance report, accepts donations, OKs leaves, trip and election appointments

Donations and consent items: Superintendent Jeff read donor acknowledgments. The city of Cannon Falls allowed disposal of 17 trees removed from district property at no charge; Cannon Cruisers Car Club donated $500 to the tennis program; and the Ed Foundation donated $550.99 to support a K–5 character-development curriculum. The board approved the consent agenda by voice vote.
Finance report: Josh, the district finance lead, reviewed the cash-flow worksheet and noted payment timing: a major payment period begins around Aug. 15, a roof payment is expected near Sept. 30 (weather-dependent), and the second half of property taxes arrives in October and November. The board approved the finance report.
Personnel leaves and coaching: The board approved childcare leaves under the teachers' master agreement (article 10, section 7) for Morgan Schwartz (Feb. 2–Apr. 30, 2026), Jade Fransen (Jan. 12–Apr. 5, 2026), Megan Lampman (Jan. 5–Mar. 29, 2026) and Becca Schmalenberg (from Feb. 25 to the end of the school year). The board also approved adding Josh Olson to the junior-high assistant football position for 2025–26; compensation will be paid by boosters.
Athletics: The board approved a youth basketball tournament fundraiser presented by softball (targeting grades 3–6) for Dec. 6–7, and it approved a spring trip to Florida for the softball program (administration estimated roughly 20–26 players would participate, with fundraising and donor support to offset costs).
Policy, elections and schedule: The annual restrictive procedures plan (policy reference GCDB) for 2025–26 was presented with no substantive changes from last year and approved. The board set the Truth-in-Taxation hearing for Dec. 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the boardroom (East 820 East Minnesota Street). The board adopted a resolution appointing election judges and an absentee ballot board for the Nov. 4 special election (absentee voting begins Sept. 19); the superintendent read the list of appointed judges and the board recorded unanimous yes votes.
Next steps: The board scheduled a special meeting for Sept. 8 at 7:00 a.m. to finalize proposed FY27 reductions and adjourned after approving the listed items.
