Summary
Public commenters at the Jan. 18 North Haledon work session asked the borough to support a youth soccer program across municipalities, urged opposition to a proposed Meadowlands methane power plant, and asked about permitting tattoo parlors under borough code; council members suggested next steps and recorded a split straw poll on zoning change.

Three members of the public spoke during the Jan. 18 Borough of North Haledon work session.
Jose Zamora, of 384 Southside Avenue in Haledon, asked the borough to support the Haledon Southside Soccer Club’s effort to form teams for children 12 and under that would include players from the three municipalities that send students to Manchester Regional High School so the players can learn to play together before high school. Councilwoman Donna Puglisi, the council’s Recreation Commission representative, said North Haledon has its own soccer program and that most borough children do not attend Manchester Regional High School; she suggested Zamora bring the idea to a Recreation Commission meeting.
Brian Russo asked Mayor Randy George if he was prepared to sign a letter opposing a proposed methane/fossil fuel power plant in the Meadowlands, and repeated concerns that NJ Transit had not proposed a clean or renewable energy alternative. Mayor George said he would read the environmental impact study and discuss the proposal at the next council meeting, and said he believed NJ Transit should propose a mix of energy sources.
Dan O’Dowd, a Hawthorne resident, asked about opening a tattoo parlor in North Haledon. The mayor cited the borough code restriction that one such license is issued per 10,000 residents and noted the borough does not currently have that population; a straw poll of councilmembers showed they were split on amending the Borough Code to allow a tattoo parlor.
Procedural notes: Councilmember Bruce O. Iacobelli moved and Councilmember Donna Puglisi seconded to open the floor to the public at the start of comments, and later Puglisi moved and Iacobelli seconded to close public comment; both motions passed on unanimous roll‑call votes. The meeting adjourned on a unanimous motion by Iacobelli, seconded by Puglisi.
