Tunica County supervisors approve routine business, set public hearing on alley abandonment

The Tunica County Board of Supervisors on March 30 approved a slate of routine administrative and financial items and authorized a public hearing on an alley abandonment.
Among the votes, the board accepted a Travelers insurance check for $4,092.75 related to a damaged sheriff’s office drone and agreed to remit the funds to the sheriff’s seized-fund account. The board also approved payment of $112.50 to the Tallahatchie County Sheriff’s Office for prescription medication billed for one male housed there and approved the removal and sale of obsolete ammunition from the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office inventory to the Tunica Police Department for $1.
The board authorized emergency services to apply for Mississippi Fiscal 2026 Homeland Security GRAMA funds to purchase a half-ton pickup and approved authorizing an electronic signature for the application.
On land-use matters, the planning commission had recommended final approval of rezoning 62.3 acres on Dundee Road (owned by Justin Carriker and Chuck Carriker) from R-1 residential to agricultural zoning; the board voted to grant final approval as recommended. The board also authorized a public hearing on abandoning and vacating an alley adjacent to a tax parcel in Hollywood under Mississippi Code 65-7-121; the county attorney explained the surplus statute and the requirement for public notice and opportunity to object.
Parks & Recreation items approved included support for a redevelopment GRAMA grant and a summer day camp (June 1–July 10), an agreement with the YMCA of Memphis to provide breakfast and lunch at GW Henderson and White Oak sites and to supply a Tuesday pickup package at Dundee and the President's Building, use of school buses for the summer day camp, and a senior-program site visit to New Sardis Church.
Other routine approvals included accepting bids to dispose of two tracts of real estate under Mississippi Code 19-7-3, authorizing department heads and designees to sign purchase requisitions, approving the county credit-card report and payroll, and adding invoices from Clayton, Upchurch and TriStar to the claims docket. The board approved reinstating Levann Hibler as a seasonal tractor driver at $16.76 per hour (April 1–Oct. 31) pending pre-employment screening, and approved a lease resolution changing Deer Properties to Yuko LLC Properties for a temporary library site.
Before adjourning to closed session, the board voted to enter closed session to discuss personnel in the maintenance and road departments, potential litigation concerning the arena, an update regarding the Harris property and a sheriff’s-office presentation.
