At the Jan. 13 meeting the Advisory Board of the Environment (ABE) reviewed application A25-0110, filed by MineWater Finance, LLC, for a minor subdivision to create a parcel that would contain the North London Mill site and adjacent wetlands. According to the materials presented, the plan anticipates donating that parcel to the U.S. Forest Service to enable rehabilitation work by North London Mill Preservation, Inc. (NoLo); a remaining 3.99 acres would be purchased by NoLo per mutual agreement.
ABE examined environmental and technical questions raised by the application and asked county staff for additional information. The board specifically requested clarification on whether old mine workings or mine tailings are present on the properties, because subsidence, open adits and tailings can create safety and contamination risks. ABE also flagged apparent discrepancies between acreages shown on the application and those on the Minor Subdivision Plat and asked whether the federal status of patented mining claims affects the proposed acreage changes.
ABE did not issue a final recommendation on A25-0110 at the meeting and asked staff to obtain the requested technical information before completing its environmental assessment.
