Alachua County commissioners on Dec. 2 voted unanimously to expand an emergency food-assistance package, authorizing fresh-food vouchers for people experiencing food insecurity (not limited to SNAP-eligible recipients), allowing resource centers to use county funds to buy commercial double-door coolers, and extending the timeframe for spending remaining allocations.
The board acted after staff described two earlier allocations: $100,000 to Bread of the Mighty (a food-bank partner) and $100,000 earmarked for farmers markets and six family resource centers to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Staff warned that vendor backlogs and delivery delays meant an initial December 31 spending deadline would likely need to be extended.
