Alachua County commissioners voted unanimously on April 14 to approve an option contract to purchase two parcels totaling about 55 acres on the southeast side of Newnan's Lake.
Andy Christman, the county Land Conservation Program manager, told the board the property includes lakeshore swamp, mesic hammock and scrubby flatwoods that are part of the East Newnan's Lake strategic ecosystem and a wildlife corridor connecting national forests. The contract purchase price is $549,400; due diligence was estimated at $47,308 and staff requested a total authorization of $656,379 including contingency.
Christman said the eastern parcel lacks independent road frontage and that public access would be limited to guided tours. He noted a standard title exception for water-front properties and recommended the board accept several standard exceptions to close the purchase.
Commissioners praised the habitat values and voted to approve staff recommendations and associated budget authority. There was no public opposition during the motion and the action passed unanimously.
Next steps include completing due diligence, satisfying title exceptions or resolving access issues, and closing the transaction if no defects are found.
