The City of the Village of Clarkston Historic District Commission voted unanimously March 10 to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness to replace deteriorated roof shingles at 8 East Washington Street.
Commission members approved a motion to “grant a Certificate of Appropriateness (CoA) to remove and replace the existing asphalt shingles with GAF Timberline HDZ Pewter Gray Algae Resistant Architectural Roof Shingles (photo provided),” a motion made by K. Trumbore and seconded by L. Patercsak. Homeowner William Basinger was not in attendance. Commissioners noted that the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation No. 6 appears to apply to the proposed work.
Michael Moon, secretary of the commission, L. Patercsak (chair) and K. Trumbore voted in favor; no commissioners voted against the motion. The roll-call vote was recorded as unanimous and the motion passed.
The commission’s discussion focused on whether the specified architectural asphalt product was suitable for the property and on confirming the location details provided in the application. The minutes note that a photograph of the proposed product was provided with the application.
The approval allows the homeowner to proceed with removal and replacement of the existing shingles using the specified GAF Timberline HDZ Pewter Gray algae‑resistant architectural shingles, subject to any building permits and code requirements that would apply separately from the commission’s design review.
The commission also approved its February 10, 2026 and February 24, 2026 meeting minutes without changes, recorded an announcement about the Michigan Historic Preservation Network’s May 7–9 statewide conference in Grosse Pointe Shores, and adjourned at 7:48 P.M. The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for April 14, 2026, at 7:00 P.M.
