Hendricks County to pursue $750,000 safety package for CR 600 North after corridor study; resident asks for left-turn lane

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — The Hendricks County Board of Commissioners on April 14 accepted recommendations from HWC Engineering’s CR 600 North Corridor Study and directed County Engineer John Ayers to identify funding to bundle proposed safety and pedestrian improvements from CR 1000 E. to Raceway Road, with preliminary construction costs estimated at $750,000.
The study recommends a series of intersection and pedestrian upgrades: ADA-compliant pedestrian push buttons and ramp reconfigurations at CR 1000 E.; marking and curb-ramp adjustments at Big Stone Drive; installation of a traffic signal with pedestrian phases at Eagle Crossing Boulevard (preliminary estimate $466,000); minor pavement and marking updates at Eagle Drive and Eagle Village Drive; and crosswalk and ramp work at Raceway Road. The study also advises peak-hour turning movement counts to determine whether a right-turn lane on the west approach of Raceway Road is warranted.
Resident Anthony Gary addressed the board during public comment, asking that the study consider a southbound left-turn lane onto Raceway Road for eastbound drivers leaving Marion County, citing safety concerns and difficulty returning home. Commissioners said they understood the concern; Commissioner Dennis Dawes noted coordination with Marion County could complicate design and funding. The board’s consensus was to move forward with improvements grouped together and for Engineer John Ayers to pursue funding sources.
Ayers and HWC emphasized that several improvements are conceptual at this stage and will require final design, field verification and coordination with adjacent jurisdictions. The corridor materials provided itemized preliminary construction estimates for each location, including $112,000 at CR 1000 E., $38,000 at Big Stone Drive, $466,000 for the Eagle Crossing signal, $13,000 at Eagle Drive, $10,000 at Eagle Village Drive, and $111,000 at Raceway Road, which together form the $750,000 total.
Next steps: the commissioners directed staff to package the recommended improvements into a coordinated project and identify funding sources; the board did not authorize final construction contracts at the meeting. Engineering recommended additional traffic counts and coordination with Marion County and local municipalities before final design.
