The Village of Fruitport council on Feb. 16 accepted recommended state and federal grants totaling $864,000 for a proposed new park property and approved related contracts and repairs that move the project toward construction.
Amy Haack, clerk, reported that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant request was recommended for funding at $400,000 and that a federal community grant announced through Congresswoman Scholten was awarded for $464,000. "The state and federal awards were announced to the village," Haack said during reports to the council.
Council member Carl Rothenberger moved and President Roger Vanderstelt supported a motion to accept a professional services contract and related letter from Westshore Engineering in the amount of $81,210 to carry the new park property project through the final construction phase; the motion passed on a roll call vote with Council members Chris LeFaive, Bill Overkamp, Rothenberger and Vanderstelt voting yes and none voting no.
On related park matters, the council accepted activity dates proposed by the Fruitport Lions Club but excluded two dates noted in the Lions' Jan. 5 letter—the corn roast and steak fry—because those dates had not been finalized, a motion moved by Rothenberger and supported by Overkamp that passed unanimously.
The council also approved a contract with Harbor Transit to provide a trolley stop in Pomona Park at a cost of $4,014.00; the motion, moved by President Vanderstelt and supported by Overkamp, passed on the same 4-0 roll call vote.
For the downtown bandshell, the council accepted an estimate from M&M Concrete, LLC in the amount of $21,690 for dance-floor and related improvements and authorized the use of $10,808 in senior millage funds toward the project; the motion, moved by Rothenberger and supported by Vanderstelt, passed unanimously.
The approvals mean engineering work will proceed under the Westshore contract through the final construction phase and that repairs and service agreements for Pomona Park amenities can move forward, per the motions approved by the council. The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
