Barry County commissioners approve parks grant, emergency management grant, patrol vehicle purchases and opioid-settlement authorization

At its March 24 meeting in Hastings, the Barry County Board of Commissioners authorized a Michigan DNR Recreation Passport grant designee for Historic Charlton Park, accepted the FY2025 EMP grant, approved purchase of three patrol vehicles, and authorized the county administrator to sign a Six Remnant Defendants opioid settlement. Several other appointments and a CDBG application LOI were also approved.
The Barry County Board of Commissioners on March 24 approved a string of county actions, including authorization for a parks grant designee, acceptance of an emergency management grant, purchase of patrol vehicles and authorization for the county administrator to sign an opioid settlement.
Dan Patton, Barry County parks and recreation director, asked the board to adopt Resolution No. 26-13 to authorize Chair David Jackson or a designee to sign documents and to designate Patton as the county designee for Michigan DNR Recreation Passport Grant Project RP25-0019 for improvements at Historic Charlton Park. Commissioner Catherine Getty moved adoption; Commissioner David Hatfield seconded, and the resolution passed unanimously.
Pattrick Jansens, emergency management coordinator, sought approval to submit and accept the FY 2025 Emergency Management Performance (EMP) Grant and to authorize the chief elected official to sign required documents. Commissioner Jon Smelker moved approval; Commissioner Marsha Bassett seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Undersheriff Kevin Erb presented a request to purchase three 4WD Tahoe police-package vehicles from Berger Chevrolet. The board approved the purchase and authorized a total not-to-exceed amount of $227,609.43 to cover the vehicles and additional in-vehicle equipment. The motion, made by Commissioner Bob Teunessen and seconded by Commissioner Mike Callton, passed with all present voting aye.
County Administrator Eric Zuzga requested authority to sign the "Six Remnant Defendants Opioid Settlement" on behalf of Barry County; the board authorized the administrator to sign. Zuzga also asked for reappointments to the county Brownfield Redevelopment Authority: the board approved reappointments for Doug Powers and Dan King to three-year terms. The agenda text initially lists term end dates as December 31, 2029, but the formal motion in the meeting record states terms ending December 31, 2028; the board voted to approve the motion as recorded.
The board also approved submission of a Letter of Intent and application for a Community Development Block Grant for the Stepping Stones Housing project and authorized the county administrator to sign necessary documents. The motion was moved by Commissioner Marsha Bassett and seconded by Commissioner Bob Teunessen.
All motions recorded in this meeting were carried with aye votes from Commissioners Bassett, Callton, Getty, Hatfield, Jackson, Smelker and Teunessen; Commissioner Bruce Campbell was absent.
What happens next: Zuzga is authorized to execute settlement paperwork and to submit required grant applications; departments will proceed with vehicle acquisition and grant implementation steps according to county procurement and grant-administration processes.
