Evansville Tree Board reports strong planting numbers, announces Arbor Day giveaway

The Evansville Tree Board presented a yearly update and invited the public to an Arbor Day celebration and free tree giveaway set for April 24 at 10:30 a.m.
Sarah Spellbring, president and co-chair of the Tree Board, said the board planted 2.5 trees for every tree removed on public property in 2025 and noted the city has been a Tree City USA since 2001. She said the board and urban-forestry staff dealt with heavy storm damage in 2025 and that crews responded to hundreds of storm-related reports.
Spellbring highlighted partnerships—naming the parks deputy Paul Balsman, the solid waste district, CenterPoint Energy volunteers and local nurseries—as critical to planting efforts. She said more than 250 trees had been planted in parks and public spaces since the start of 2026 and invited council and staff participation in volunteer events.
The board encouraged residents to attend the April 24 event for a free tree and a planting demonstration; the giveaway is first-come, first-served, and most trees are sizable (about 3–4 foot root tubes).
