The Senate Natural Resources Committee adopted an amendment and reported House Bill 727 as amended on April 22. The bill, sponsored in the House by Representative Desotel, would allow the open burning of untreated, unpainted dimensional lumber that regulators have been treating as construction debris.
Representative Desotel said the measure was prompted by citations issued to contractors and homeowners for burning construction lumber and explained the intent was to "carve out" untreated dimensional lumber from the construction‑debris prohibition. "So we're just carving out wood, you know, the 2 by fours now," he told the committee.
A technical amendment (No. 2406) was read into the record; the amendment restates the department's role and requires the department to promulgate rules and regulations to implement the law. The amendment was adopted without objection and, after discussion, Senator Lambert moved to report HB 727 as amended. With no objections, the committee reported the bill as amended.
