He said Minnesota Housing Finance Agency denied multiple applications to finance housing on the site despite the city’s investments and urged council members to ask state legislators why the project was not prioritized. He described a proposed 700-unit mixed-income development with a third affordable units and a third workforce housing as meeting policy goals and argued the project could bring significant economic and employment benefits to North Minneapolis.
English asked the council to consider local bonding if the state refused support and said advocates would hold legislators accountable in upcoming elections. Chair Osman thanked the speaker for his remarks; the committee adjourned shortly after his comments.
