At its May 27, 2025 special regular meeting, the Maple Valley City Council recorded the following actions and outcomes.
• Agenda and meeting management: Council approved the amended agenda (motion by Councilmember Victoria Schroff; second by Councilmember John Herbert). The motion to approve the agenda carried 6-0 (Mayor Kelly had not yet arrived). The council also approved moving the executive-session item to the end of the meeting (motion by Deputy Mayor Dana Parnello; second by Councilmember Didem Pierson; motion carried 6-0).
• Consent calendar: The council approved minutes from May 12, 2025; vendor and benefit checks, wire transfers and payroll items totaling $1,013,409.06 (for May 20, 2025); and resolutions R-25-1976 (Amendment No. 2 to the public works street sweeping contract with McDonough and Sons, Inc.) and R-25-1982 (discretionary work request with King County Road Services for the 2025 Pavement Overlay Program). Motion to approve the Consent Calendar carried 6-0 (moved by Councilmember Didem Pierson; seconded by Councilmember John Herbert).
• New business nominations and appointments: Mayor Sean P. Kelly nominated Councilmember John Herbert as the voting delegate for the Association of Washington Cities annual meeting; motion passed 7-0. Council approved appointments of Tomas Paramo, Thomas Cowdery, Danny DeCiryan and Michael Tate to city commissions (motion carried 7-0).
• Meeting time and procedural motions: Councilmember John Herbert moved to extend the meeting to 10:00 p.m.; Councilmember Didem Pierson seconded and the motion passed 7-0.
• Executive-session personnel actions: After a closed-session performance review under RCW 42.30.110(1)(g), the council approved a 4% step increase and a $14,622.63 bonus for City Manager Laura Philpot and approved the final evaluation; all motions passed 7-0.
The council listed a Special Meeting — Council Retreat on June 2, 2025 at Lake Wilderness Lodge and adjourned at 10:04 p.m.
