Maple Valley council approves 4% step increase and $14,622.63 bonus for City Manager after performance review

The Maple Valley City Council unanimously approved a 4% step increase and a $14,622.63 performance bonus for City Manager Laura Philpot following a closed-session review on May 27, 2025.
The action followed an executive session the council held to review the performance of a public employee under RCW 42.30.110(1)(g). After returning to open session, Deputy Mayor Dana Parnello moved to approve the 4% step increase; Councilmember Les Burberry seconded and the motion carried 7-0. Councilmember Victoria Schroff moved approval of the $14,622.63 bonus for the April 1, 2024–March 31, 2025 performance period; Mayor Sean P. Kelly seconded and the motion carried 7-0. Councilmember Didem Pierson moved and Councilmember Les Burberry seconded approval of the final City Manager evaluation; that motion also carried 7-0.
City Manager Laura Philpot acknowledged the council's action during the session. Council also concurred to adopt a new city manager evaluation process beginning April 1, 2025.
The council first recessed into executive session at 9:16 p.m., extended that session and reconvened in open session to take the recorded motions and votes. All votes on the City Manager compensation and evaluation were unanimous, with Mayor Kelly present by the time of those votes.
The council adjourned the meeting at 10:04 p.m.
