Depew trustees authorize bids for a new garbage contract, approve returning firefighter and make appointments

The Village of Depew Board of Trustees on April 27 unanimously authorized the village administrator to advertise for bids on a new municipal solid‑waste, bulk‑waste and recycling contract and approved a series of routine personnel and contract actions.
Trustees voted to set the bid opening for May 22, 2026, at noon and said the request will seek a six‑year contract term to account for rising collection costs. Trustee Zee moved the bid authorization and it passed on a roll‑call vote with all present voting yes (Trustee Adolph; Trustee Zimba; Trustee Kraft; Deputy Mayor Morawski; Mayor Kevin J. Peterson). Mayor Peterson told the board, "We're asking for a 6 year contract in this next round." The board discussed the village's desire to handle resident complaints directly rather than rely on national customer‑service hotlines.
The board also unanimously approved membership for returning volunteer Scott Weneman in the Depew Volunteer Fire Department pending a medical exam. A motion to grant membership was moved and seconded and carried by roll call with the same board members voting yes.
Trustees authorized Mayor Kevin J. Peterson to sign an amended Phase 10 contract between Municipal Solutions and the Village of Depew; that motion passed by roll call. The board approved multiple permissions for fire‑department training and community events, including emergency vehicle operations and firefighter courses in early May and use of the Northside and Southside fire stations for upcoming community events.
Pursuant to Village Law §4‑400, Mayor Kevin J. Peterson appointed Jowon Brown as a part‑time provisional court officer effective April 27, 2026; the appointment passed by roll call. The board also approved claims and accounts audited by the finance committee totaling $509,440.54 (General Fund $69,693.96; Community Development $11,712.50; Capital Projects $428,034.08).
Finally, trustees approved a resolution to hold a special meeting on April 29, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. solely for adoption of the 2026–27 budget. Board members said additional time was needed to finalize several union contracts and other budget variables.
The board entered executive session near 7:41 p.m. to discuss a pending, possible litigation matter, returned at 8:07 p.m. with no decisions announced, and adjourned at about 8:09 p.m.
