Bozeman traffic‑calming program sees limited early interest; staff may extend March 6 deadline

Board Chair Rio and Director Ross discussed the neighborhood traffic calming program and the low initial number of formal requests during the Feb. 25 meeting.
"Unfortunately, we have not received a ton of attention quite yet. It's a new program," Director Ross said, adding the low submission rate does not necessarily indicate lack of need. He told the Board staff will work through previously received ad‑hoc requests and try to avoid missing the construction season for viable projects.
Ross described outreach steps already underway — social media posts, media pieces by transportation engineer Danae Giannetti, and attendance at an inter‑neighborhood council meeting — and said the City maintains program details on the City website. He said the March 6 deadline for applications was set when staff expected a larger initial response but that staff would extend the deadline or accept rolling applications if interest remains low.
Chair Rio urged listeners to submit traffic calming requests and asked whether the City could use Engage Bozeman; Ross said Engage is reserved for project‑specific community engagement but that staff will continue social outreach and encourage Board members to share information with neighborhoods. "If that deadline is a barrier, I'm not gonna have any problem extending or really even washing it," Ross said.
The Board did not take formal action on the traffic calming program at the Feb. 25 meeting because the body lacked a quorum. Ross asked that Board members prepare to review traffic‑calming program elements and participate in discussion at the March meeting.
