Councilmember Steele and American Red Cross volunteer Mia Lamedico updated the Seal Beach City Council on a March 28 "Sound the Alarm" event in Leisure World Mutual 3 that targeted fire safety for senior residents.
Mia Lamedico, public engagement coordinator for the American Red Cross Orange County chapter, told the council that volunteers installed 392 smoke alarms, handed out 174 home fire escape plans and 203 home fire safety checklists, and in total served more than 300 residents across 228 homes. Randall Healy, president of Mutual 3 Leisure World, said his group’s electrician added roughly 60 additional units on site and that about 400 units remain to be addressed in the community of roughly 9,600 units and more than 10,000 residents.
Councilmember Steele thanked volunteers, the Red Cross and the fire department for their work. Speakers emphasized the importance of such outreach in a community with older housing stock and recent local fires. No council action was required; the report was informational and the city indicated continued collaboration with community partners to finish remaining units.
