The Tumwater Civil Service Commission approved an exam plan to recruit a police executive assistant position that the city council recently authorized.
Michelle Sutherland, the commission’s secretary examiner, said the council approved adding the position at its February meeting and staff proposed a recruitment procedure to begin immediately: the application will be posted continuously with an initial review after two weeks; applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be advanced to a 10-question oral board scored to 100 points, and a minimum passing score of 70% will be required.
Sutherland said the oral board will assess job-related administrative expertise, team and service orientation, judgment and decision-making, and communication skills. The plan allows the chief to interview the top seven candidates from the eligibility list.
Chair Blake Chard moved to approve the exam plan and Pat Schneider seconded. The commission approved the exam plan by voice vote and directed staff to begin recruitment under the adopted plan.
Sutherland expected the position to be competitive given duties supporting the chief and command staff.
