Henderson County staff on April 15 received Board authorization to submit a Letter of Intent for a $500,000 Collaboration & Innovation Grant from the Dogwood Health Trust to pilot a regional real-time wildfire detection camera network.
Staff described the wildfire risk increase following Hurricane Helene because of fallen timber and access challenges. The proposed pilot would deploy mountaintop cameras with real-time detection and notification capabilities across three counties. Meeting materials said the North Carolina Forest Service would serve as regional partner and has received a commitment from the U.S. Forest Service to continue build-out with federal funds if the pilot is successful; the State Climate Office would host program data.
The Board moved to approve submission of the Letter of Intent as part of the consent agenda; the consent agenda passed unanimously. The Letter of Intent would fund proof of concept; if selected, project partners plan to pursue federal and state funding for broader deployment.
The motion authorized staff to proceed with the Letter of Intent submission; any subsequent grant award and project implementation would be subject to further Board approval and budget amendments.
