Summary
TJ Johnson, chair of the Thurston Conservation District board, told the Yelm council about the district’s new strategic plan, noted the district is nonregulatory, and described its budget and priorities while asking for local partnerships.
TJ Johnson, chair of the Thurston Conservation District Board of Supervisors, spoke during public comment to present the district’s new strategic plan, described as “2040 and beyond.” Johnson said the district is nonregulatory, works with private landowners on conservation and stewardship, and brings funding and technical support to local jurisdictions.
“Rates and charges brings in about $565,000 a year,” Johnson said when describing the district’s local revenue base, and added: “Our total budget this year is $9,700,000, but only 6% of that comes from Thurston County.” He said those funds allow the district to leverage state and other resources for conservation, climate resilience, farmland preservation and expanded local food production.
Johnson asked the council to partner with the district and left copies of the strategic plan and the district’s annual report for council review. He also offered to answer any questions from the council.
