Coral Springs to add fiber sites and increase Cisco equipment spending as network work runs ahead of schedule

City IT staff told the commission the city’s fiber project is ahead of schedule and under budget and asked the commission to authorize a third phase to add about 17 additional sites and to increase funding for network switches and licensing.
Steven, an IT presenter, reported the city is installing roughly 30 miles of fiber, that an original purchase order included a $1.2 million contingency and the project has used less than $200,000 of that contingency so far. He said staff seeks to use available ARPA funds to complete phase three — adding about 17 more sites — at an estimated cost of about $837,000 and asked the commission to waive the procurement code to allow the current vendor to complete the additional scope.
On a separate but related item, Steven asked the commission to increase the NASPO contract authority for Cisco equipment from $450,000 to $925,000 so the city can purchase needed switches and associated licensing before the contract expires on Sept. 30. He said the additional spending is within the city’s approved capital budget.
“It's project is ahead of schedule and it's under budget right now,” Steven said of the fiber work, and later: “We need to increase that to 925,000 and the reason why is because the fiber is ahead of schedule and we need to buy these switches before September 30.”
Commissioners voted unanimously to waive award and authorize the additional fiber sites and to approve the increased contract authority.
Staff said the work will be funded with ARPA and existing capital budget allocations and that contingency funds remain available.
