FFA students describe PFAS contamination risks to West Plains aquifer at Medical Lake meeting

At the council meeting, an FFA team gave a public presentation detailing local PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) concerns and urging expanded mitigation and monitoring across the West Plains aquifer.
The presenters reviewed national and local cases where firefighting foams and biosolids led to long-term PFAS contamination, and highlighted local impacts: "PFAS contamination levels on the West Plains are 57 times higher than the national average," one presenter said, arguing that the contamination has reached crops, livestock and private wells in the region.
They described the West Plains aquifer as unusually vulnerable because of porous soils and fractured basalt channels and cited local research mapping PFAS movement through paleo channels. The presentation included personal accounts and community impacts: a resident household that experienced elevated PFAS levels and changes to agricultural operations was cited as an example of the human and economic consequences.
Councilmembers asked technical questions about remediation, deeper well construction and county testing programs; presenters and county-affiliated participants said deeper wells can reduce exposure but do not always eliminate contamination and that removal of contaminated soils is logistically difficult. Presenters urged more funding and local action, while some council members noted the need to understand the limits of local authority and the high costs of large-scale remediation.
The presenters asked the council to keep PFAS issues on the agenda as work on the aquifer APA and related monitoring continues.
