Summary
TANG recreation staff reported new and expanded programming, facility improvements and a $65,000 contribution from Tagg Inc.; staff said the center’s air-handling unit will likely need replacement within five years and proposed membership and revenue strategies to address a longstanding operating deficit.
At the April 27 Public Works Committee meeting, TANG recreation staff outlined program expansion, facility repairs and a recent private contribution that city leaders say will help short-term priorities.
Staff said the summer program guide will be released soon with new offerings including water volleyball, summer camps and a babysitting course; senior meals are scheduled to begin May 4. Facility improvements completed or underway include new carpet, TVs in the fitness center, and repair of a golf simulator. Staff reported working with a vendor to improve sound integration for new TVs.
The committee heard that Tagg Inc. contributed $65,000 to address priority pool and facility needs and equipment updates; staff said they are stretching those funds across several projects. Staff also reported a need to plan for a replacement of the facility’s air-handling unit within the next five years and said they are gathering scope and cost information.
Separately, Public Works reported that the street sweeper is back in operation, stump grinding removed 43 stumps across parks and city lots, brush pickup and bulk-drop schedules were set and crews are doing top-dressing at ballfields. New tree plantings were also reported for multiple parks and the department said it will meet with a vendor to order main-street planters for the upcoming season.
Committee members asked about membership structures, sweep timing and operational costs; staff said membership counts are near all-time highs and that they will bring proposals to the next meeting on possible new membership options and partnerships with neighboring communities.
