Chuck Areca, a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club, told the Los Banos Unified School District board that the nonprofit’s recent partnership with the district produced strong summer programming and encouraged parents to get involved in a steering committee. “We had summer camp at Grasslands Elementary this past year. We had approximately 121 students participate with a daily average attendance of 84,” Areca said, noting the program’s July–August attendance and that 12 students are on a pre-registration list for after‑school programming drawn from a LEAP waiting list.
Mike Manias, another longtime volunteer, described plans to expand club offerings beyond traditional sports to include camps focused on drones and gaming and said local alumni and community members could be a resource for new programs. He urged the board and staff to collaborate on finding facilities and funding to reach more children.
The volunteers thanked district staff and specific employees who helped connect children with services and encouraged parents to consider joining the club’s steering committee to shape programming and offer ideas. The speakers framed their remarks as a request to continue and deepen the district–nonprofit partnership rather than a formal district action.
Board members responded appreciatively, noting excitement about the program and the possibility of serving more students. No formal action followed the comments; the board proceeded to routine reports and agenda items.
