Commission approves consent items adding state funds for bridge and pedestrian projects

• $325,040 from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to establish and fund a new Pedestrian Beacon (24th and Main) project to plan, design and install a pedestrian hybrid beacon at 24th Street and Main Street.
• A grant (packet shows funding adjustments of roughly $915,896–$960,896) from VDOT to add funds to the capital budget for the East Richmond Road over Gilly bridge replacement project.
Andy Bano, DPW Director of Transportation, explained the pedestrian hybrid-beacon technology to commissioners: rather than a flashing light, the beacon operates like a traffic signal when activated by a pedestrian, stopping traffic at multi-lane crosswalks: “You press the button, you wait for the red light to come up, and it stops traffic.” The commission called the public hearing, received no online comments and approved the consent agenda by roll call.
Those consent items will be forwarded to City Council with the Planning Commission’s recommendation of approval.
