Commissioner clarifies sheriff-office vehicle incident, says earlier citizen account was incorrect

Summary
Commissioner Martin told the board the patrol-vehicle incident occurred on Robertson Bridge Road during a motorcycle pursuit, was not a head-on collision, and involved a rear-end by a second patrol vehicle; he said it was reviewed and insurance covered the damage.
Commissioner Martin used the board’s weekly meeting to correct what he described as inaccurate public comments made at a prior session about a sheriff’s-office vehicle incident.
"First of all, this incident did not occur in Selma as was presented," Commissioner Martin said, adding the event took place on Robertson Bridge Road during an active pursuit of a motorcycle. He said the lead patrol vehicle slowed and began turning to overtake the motorcycle and was then rear-ended by a second patrol vehicle. "Thus, yes, it did total two vehicles," he said.
Commissioner Martin said the incident was taken seriously, thoroughly reviewed, and that appropriate action was taken where necessary; insurance covered the vehicle damage. He framed his remarks as an effort to stop the spread of misinformation and to ensure transparency.
The chair said he contacted the sheriff and the individual who had earlier misunderstood the incident to clear up the record. No formal disciplinary action or policy vote was recorded in the meeting minutes on Wednesday.
The board adjourned at about 9:15 a.m.
