The Wethersfield Board of Education approved a revised 2025–26 school calendar after members debated how to recover snow days and whether Juneteenth should be used for instructional programming.
Superintendent Whibbe told the Board that accumulated snow days would push the projected last day of school into late June unless the district used mitigation strategies to preserve instructional time and remain compliant with the state requirement for 180 school days. He proposed options including conditional use of a small number of winter break days for emergency makeup and an April contingency to be activated if the district reaches more than four snow days by Feb. 28.
Discussion among board members focused largely on the Juneteenth holiday. One board member urged that Juneteenth be treated as a learning opportunity rather than only a day off, saying, “I would like to see us use Juneteenth as a learning event in school.” Another board member and several commenters warned that developing a meaningful curriculum on short notice would be rushed and suggested planning for future years instead.
Concerns were also raised about contractual obligations and the teachers’ bargaining unit; board members said they had discussed calendar options with bargaining units and parent groups in advance. Several members favored preserving instructional time where possible rather than cutting days at the end of the year.
After discussion and a voice vote the Board approved the superintendent’s recommended revision to the 2025–26 calendar. Board members requested further calendar work with representative parent, teacher and administrative groups as the district develops the 2027–29 two‑year calendar cycle.
The superintendent said he will convene a calendar build team, followed by a broader review team and then a parent advisory group, with the goal of returning a vetted two‑year calendar to the Board by next October.
