Mindy said the funds will be used for a mix of strategic planning and direct family supports, noting, “1 of the things that I'm really excited about is, there's an opportunity to use some of this money for strategic planning for WEC.”
A board supporter expanded on the planned activities, saying the grant will fund a Family Resource Center, multilingual toolkits, an expanded Parent Ambassadors program and data‑driven evaluation systems designed to continue beyond the grant period. Superintendent Whibbe and other board members stressed alignment with the district’s District Continuous Improvement Plan and early‑literacy priorities.
Some board members asked for additional detail and requested that WEC leadership present to the full board in a future meeting so members could review specific implementation plans and budgets. Mindy and other supporters said they expected the grant to increase preschool participation and strengthen family engagement by training parent ambassadors to conduct outreach and by building literacy resources in community locations.
The motion as moved read in part that the Board would authorize the superintendent to accept and implement the $250,000 legislative earmark with Wethersfield Public Schools as the fiscal agent and WEC as the partner. The board approved the motion by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Next steps the board identified included inviting WEC leadership (Kim Bobbin was named repeatedly in discussion) to provide a detailed presentation on how the funds will be allocated and how the initiative’s outcomes will be measured.
